Yasuke is the 2nd painting in the Clash of Culture series. The Clash of the Culture series is a collection of paintings that highlight people of color in the different cultures and eras in history. Yasuke (弥助or 弥介) was a man of African origin who came to Japan in the Sengoku period and became a retainer in the household of Oda Nobunaga.Yasuke was the only African and first non-Japanese samurai. His story began around 1579 in Edo Japan.
