Nat Love (Deadwood Dick) is 14th painting in the Clash of
Culture series. The Clash of the Culture series is a collection of
paintings that highlight people of color in the different cultures
and eras in history. This piece depicts Nat Love, born into
slavery, he became a champion roper and sharpshooter. A lot of
people don’t know the 1st “Cowboys” were black. The term
"cowboy" began as a racial slur. While white ranch workers were
called "cowhands" or "cattlemen," Black men were pejoratively
referred to as "boys," leading to the title "cowboy". The cowboy
lifestyle was heavily influenced by Mexican vaqueros, who
taught both Black and white settlers the essential techniques of
roping and herding.
