Dakota is 15th painting in the Clash of Culture series. The Clash of the Culture series is a collection of paintings that highlight people of color in the different cultures and eras in history. This piece depicts a beautiful black cowgirl. Black cowgirls were essential, yet often overlooked, trailblazers in the American West, with many being daughters of formerly enslaved people who migrated west after 1865 for freedom and opportunity. They worked as ranch hands, broke wild horses, and mastered roping. Despite facing systemic racism, Black cowgirls thrived by building their own communities and demonstrating exceptional skills in a rugged, male-dominated environment.
